Our Story

Miss Direction is based in southeast Kentucky in the London/Corbin area. The band performs music from a variety of genres including jazz, funk, ballads, gospel, pop and more. New music is constantly being added to the repertoire so that each performance is unique. The band performs regularly at various venues throughout Kentucky and Tennessee.

Miss Direction started as the University of the Cumberlands Jazz Combo in 2014. The band was formed by UC music faculty members David Threlkeld and Dr. Steven Sudduth with Threlkeld on saxophone and Sudduth on trombone. UC music students performed in the rhythm section and on vocals. The band has continued to perform even after the student members graduated. UC alumni Marissa Hedrick (vocals) and Jayson Smith (drums) still perform with the band regularly and UC alumnus Aaron Zecchini has been added on guitar.

With the graduation of some of the members of the band and the addition of new members, a new name was needed. In May 2016 the band officially changed their name to Miss Direction. Miss Direction refers to the fact that the band continually keeps their audiences on their toes by performing new music in older jazz styles and older jazz standards in newer styles, all mixed with authentic traditional music and contemporary pop music. And of course, the female vocalist adds the Miss to Miss Direction!

Now that Miss Direction has an official name and a new website (thanks for visiting!), new projects include recording, and creating videos of performances for all to enjoy. Please sign up for our mailing list if you would like to receive emails about future performances and other updates about the band. We promise not to clutter your inbox!
